Ruruku Ngutukaka - Bound and secured by the ngutukaka. The
ngutukaka design depicts the elegant and rare flower of the ngutuka-
ka and is symbolic of guardianship. The literal meaning refers to thebeak of the Kaka (parrot) which the flower of the Ngutukaka is said
to look like. It is a symbol of elegance, beauty and love and is tied to
kaitiakitanga or the responsibility to protect and care for precious
things.
Angus Christy is a Māori wood-carver who has been honing his skills across decades. An art passed down from his father, Maori wood-carving is a discipline that preserves stories and protects tradition, ritual, and identity.
